ANC3D is interested in what you think about DDOT's plan to replace the AZ Avenue Pedestrian Bridge and the associated trail and sidewalk improvements. DDOT presented the plan to the community on 9/30 in a recorded virtual meeting. You can view DDOT's entire slide deck presentation. Be sure to scroll to the bottom to take DDOT's survey.

This page is designed to inform the public of DDOT's proposed project and gather comments on aspects of the plan. We encourage everyone to click on each tile below to learn about different parts of the plan and to comment. All comments are public and we encourage people to read the comments and like the ones you agree with! Helpful comments include why you like a particular aspect of the plan or why you don't, or even ideas to improve the plan or changes that could be made that would broaden support. Sometimes DDOT can improve a plan's design with neighborhood insights and creativity.

Please remember to be kind and respectful of each other's views. Afterall, neighbors are expressing their preference and nobody's preference is "right" or "wrong". We are interested in what you think of the new bridge and ramp design, sidewalks and pedestrian crossing, and the associated improvements to the trail plus drainage. There is also an option to make no improvements to the trail. We would like feedback on this option as well.

Tricia Duncan11 months ago DDOT proposes to install new sidewalks along Arizona Ave from Sherier Pl to Carolina Pl, and also install sidewalks along Sherier Pl to fill the sidewalk gap near the intersection of Arizona Ave. The sidewalk will be a typical design that is 10 feet from the curb with a tree box. All of the sidewalks will be installed in the public Right of Way meaning the sidewalks are on public land. DDOT has committed to working with neighbors to relocate plantings and hardscape where possible. The sidewalk plan is below and shows the sidewalks in yellow.

Tricia Duncan11 months ago DDOT is proposing to replace the bridge with a prefabricated steel "box" truss. There will be mesh panels on the sides and top with a safety handrail at 42". The deck will be concrete. The new bridge will meet federal height standardsThe existing ramp on the west side of Arizona will be replaced and since the bridge will be higher the ramp will be a bit longer than the current ramp. The new ramp will meet ADA accessibility requirements.

Tricia Duncan11 months ago DDOT understands that some have a preference to keep the trail in its current state. Under this option, DDOT would replace the pedestrian bridge and would grade both sides of the bridge so there is no step down. This entails sloping the two ends of the bridge until they meet grade which would likely be about 20-25 feet of improvements on either side of the bridge. Under this option: Not ADA Compliant Not durable or all-weather Uneven rolling surface No drainage improvements No DDOT maintenance Currently, the trail is maintained by volunteers along with grants from the Palisades Community Fund and ANC3D. The wood chips are deposited along the trail by DC Urban Forestry when available. The trails sides are mowed where grass is present by the city and we expect that would remain in place.

Tricia Duncan11 months ago DDOT is proposing to make improvements to the trail that connects to the pedestrian bridge and extends from Galena Pl, across the pedestrian bridge, through Palisades Park and continuing on to where the trail meets Sherier Pl as it loops to Nebraska Ave. The surface DDOT is proposing is an asphalt trail surface. The width of the right of way along the trail is 30 feet minimum. The trail will be 10 feet wide with an asphalt surface. The trail will have a 2-foot shoulder with a soft surface suitable for walking on both sides. The trail will also have a combination of vegetation and drainage bioswales at various points.Other features include: ADA compliant trail Durable all-weather surface Smooth rolling surface Provide drainage improvements along the trail which will tie storm water into drainage systems in some areas. Other areas will have bioswales to collect water. DDOT will maintain this trail Click here for larger drainage image.

Kenneth Buckley6 months ago The trolley trail intersection (cross over) at Chain Bridge road is already hazardous. Bicyclist often blindly speed across the road without looking for cars. A group of bicyclists likes to travel at night and again cross the road without looking. Visibility of the trolley trail is restricted by the natural terrain when driving up from the end of Chain Bridge Road. Clear visibility of the trolley trail is also restricted when driving the opposite direction. I have narrowly avoided striking bicyclist darting our without looking. Fortunately I drive slow. However, with a hard surface installed along the trail, bikers will fly across the road at higher speeds.DDOT should install a chicane design that would require bicyclists to slow down or stop and walk their bikes across the road. It would be inexcusable if DDOT ignores this safety hazed.
